The Ego and the Id are mechanisms within our mind.
Ego
The Ego is 'a coherent organisation of mental processes'.
These processes:
- Supervises your mind.
- Represses ideas that go against the Ego.
- This point suggests that there is an unconscious part of the Ego that's working unbeknownst to the conscious to suppress ideas. That's why we've illustrated the Ego as stretching into the preconscious-unconscious.
- Control how you release energy into the external world.
The Ego starts with the system of perception and then starts to include pieces from the preconscious, which itself works off traces from past experiences.
The Ego sits in-between the external world and the Id, much like a skin. The Ego doesn't fully surround the Id, it only surrounds the Id relative to the size of your five senses (the perceptive system). For example, the Ego of someone who is deaf-blind will surround the Id less than someone who has all five senses functioning.
When the Ego represses perceptions, it shoves them down into the Id and these repressed ideas become part of the Id. These ideas can then communicate with the Ego through the Id.
Id
The Id lives deep inside the unconscious and is built on raw instinct. That's pure unfiltered and unrestrained instinct with no morals or principles.
Ego vs Id
| Ego | Id |
|---|---|
| The Ego is the realist. | The Id is the romantic. |
| It is greatly influenced by the five senses and the conscious. | It is greatly influenced by instinct and passion. |
The Ego tries to keep the Id in check in line with reality. However, the Ego doesn't have any strength of its own so it's not able to over power the Id on its own accord.
Instead it serves to satisfy the Id's desires by steering it through reality. One way or another the Id gets what it wants, the Ego has to deal with reality and somehow find a way to satisfy the Id.
Even in people who have strong self-critical skills (who can reflect on their own behaviour) and have strong reasoning skills, there are still unconscious forces at play influencing these thoughts.
